Burundian and Napsa Stars forward Laudit Mavugo is the first player to hit double digits on the transitional 2019 MTN FAZ Super League combined top scorer’s chart after scoring 10 goals in fifteen matches.
Mavugo, who plays in Stream B of the transitional league, moved to the top of the chart after he scored a hattrick in Napsa Stars’ 3-2 victory away to Forest Rangers on Saturday.
The former Simba SC forward announced his arrival in the Zambian league with a brace on debut on matchday one, and scored a further three goals in the next five matches to take him to five goals in his first six matches for the Pensioners.
He would not find the back of the net in the next five matches, but found his scoring boots on matchday twelve when he scored his second brace which was followed by a hattrick on matchday fifteen.
Zimbabwean midfielder Tafadzwa Rusike of Zanaco is the only other player to have scored a brace and a hattrick in the current season.
Most of the Burundian’s goals – eight – have been scored from open play, while two were scored from the penalty spot.
If he hopes to be the the top marksman at the end of the season, he has four regular fixtures in which to add to his tally, including Napsa Stars’ game in hand with Nkana. Should Napsa Stars, who are seven points adrift of leaders Green Eagles, finish top of Stream B, Mavugo will have a further chance to add to his goal tally in the play-off for the title against the winner of Stream A.
However, his hopes could easily vanish as he faces stiff competition from the chasing pack led by 2017 top scorer Chrispine Mugalu of Lusaka Dynamos and Austin Muwowo of Forest Rangers who are both on nine goals.
Jesse Were of Zesco United and Tafadzwa Rusike of Zanaco on eight goals apiece are the other contenders along with Zikiru Adams of Forest Rangers on seven goals.
Zanaco forward Roger Kola out with injury for the rest of the season after scoring eight league goals is out of contention.
In Kola’s absence, it is dimunitive midfielder Austin Muwowo, who is the only Zambian with a realistic chance of winning the top scorer’s award, which has not been won by a Zambian since 2015 when Zesco United striker Winston Kalengo top scored with 18 goals.
The MTN FAZ Super League top scorer’s award worth K20, 000.00 in cash is only handed out to a leading scorer who has scored a minimum of fifteen league goals in a given season.
